Rain had been forecast ( not something we have struck so far, and we are now half way through the trip), but apart from some cloud at the start, it was a perfect day.
First stop on the island was the old cemetery. I really liked the view of the 1175 m Uummannaq mountain through the old entrance gate. There must be another graveyard, as this was too small for a town of about 1300. Apparently close to Uummannaq is the world's northernmost ice golf course! Would love to have seen it!
We, Angie and I, set off towards Father Christmas's summer home 😚. actually, I didnt care about the home that much but was keen to explore the island a bit on a marked pathway. It proved to be a great plan and we had a phenomenal walk through the rocky slopes of the island to a spot with a breathtaking panorama of the mountains and fiord. We took a while to get out of town because of local distractions - so cute, would have loved to have brought one back home ( there were three of these cuddly little pups).
The hones were also fantastic, perched up on hills, seemingly just resting on the stone. Although there were some streets, most houses were once again only accessible by steep wooden steps.
Once we had left the town we really felt as if we were out in the wilderness. It was rugged terrain but a good track weaving its way through the colourful outcrops, always with the mountain towering over us. Magnificent.
Once I reached the top of a pass, I opted to stop and stare rather than continue. I was not sure we would make the last tender back to the ship if we continued. It was such a beautiful place.
On the way back we were lucky enough to see some fabulous reflections in what must be the town's reservoir.
As you get closer to town, there are pipes everywhere. I assume it is for drinking water. It makes for a very different landscape but although pipes arenot generally attractive, they are fascinating here.
Although we had been walking for several hours, I was determined to go up to a lookout we had seen from our other walk. After some steep wooden stairs, here we were above the town, looking back overwhere we had just cone from. We realised how far we had actually walked.
So with just half an hour to spare we headed back to the ship. From the picture below one has a good idea of the size of the iceberg we were anchored next to. Some are really huge!
As we ate lunch out on deck 6 we had brilliant weather and scenery as we headed back out to sea and to Ilulissat, where we will stay 2 days. I really hope the weather will continue to be good to us as apparently it should be a highlight of the trip. After lunch I dragged myself up to the top floor, 9 th, for my salsa lesson. Great fun, but I struggled to get my legs moving again.
And last but not least in the evening we had a buffet magnifique. Fantastic food, but we all had to eat in the restaurant and I missed the outside atmosphere and also felt like the odd one out because I am always outside. It is also quite hard to follow conversations as it is quite noisy . Great meal though and fabulous decoration!
