Thiessow market, Goehren and Binz

Today was our last day on the island and a chance for Uta to relax and for us to use bus and steam train.

We took the bus, unbelievably crowded, to a little market in Thiessow. It seemed that the entire popultion of the  island converges on this market. As we got out of the bus , there was a thick stream of people, many with either dogs or bicycles, heading for the market. It was small, but had some good quality handcrafted items. I had to keep telling myself I had a long train journey ahead!

We got off at what seemed a very pleasant  place to stay, Goehren. In fact, all the towns we visited were very neat and tidy, with super clean streets.
Like Sellin, there was also a little station for the wee steam train, Rasender Roland - racing Roland, which we took to Binz.

What a fantastic journey in the ouside carriage through the forests and rolling farmland to the much larger tourist town of Binz. Here, a picture of Roland!

I enjoyed our time in Binz, where we strolled along  the pretty promenade. We had lunch at this spot which was lovely, overlooking a very large lake. Everything is so tastefully designed, and once more unbelievably neat and tidy.

The sand exhibition, I believe the largest indoor show in the world, was absolutely out ofthis world. I cannot imagine how long it must take the artists design, prepare and make these sculptures. Most of the artists were from Russia or the Balkans.

My favourite was this one below, which was only a small part of oneexhibit. The facial expressions are brilliant.

I loved this one too. I could just imagine the cheeky monkeys having so much fun. What detail! We walked through twice to be able to full appreciate the sculptures.

Our last stop was Binz pier which also seemed to suffer a lot of disasters and was only recently rebuilt.  They were evidently hugely concerned about disasters and so had this unbelievably long list of rules, and long words!

Having read and inwardly digested the rules we could enjoy a leusurely stroll on the pier with a view back to the massive Kurhaus hotel and the long sandy beach with its hundreds of strandkorbs.

We finished the day with a fish meal. We had really been looking forward to going to the Fisch Halle in Sellin. Unfortunately it was not what I expected. So different from British fish takeaways. I had what seemed to be a fishcake, but it was very dry and was like eating breadcrumbs with a faint hint of fish. I also had a piece of smoked salmon fillet,  but it too was rather dry, though still quite tasty. I ordered chips too, but did not realise that the fish we bought was not hot , so by the time the fish was hot, the chips were cold. All in all, it was an experience. I must say my fish in the hotel the day before was much better! Uta enjoyed her meal more, probably because it was as she expected it to be. Fascinating cultural differences. This is one of the aspects of travel I enjoy the most.
