I have to admit to feeling exhausted as we arrived in Sisimiut. So much walking and so many remarkable experiences over the past days. Hard to take it all in so I felt I needed a day off!
Sisimiut is about 100 km north of the Arctic circle and is the second biggest town in Greenland with 5500 inhabitants and so many cars. We have almost forgotten what it is like to have busy streets, noise and exhaust fumes.
Uschi and I had booked to go to visit the huskies. I am not sure what I had expected, but we went to a private home where the lady had 14 dogs, with the youngest puppies already quite large, 6 months old. Of course all the dogs are gorgeous, but the pups are really special. Luckily her neighbour had 3 young , friendly and very laid back pups all of which I would love to have taken home with me rather than leave them to a life on a chain from the age of 6 months, tied to the same spot 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. I thought that the dogs were a vital part of the people's lives here, but was shocked to find that this lady only had the dogs for fun. If animals were kept like this in a zoo, there would be uproar!
Here my favourite pup, still enjoying its freedom.
What a cutie! You can see why I wanted to bring them home!
After lunch on board I set off up the hill into town. However, the noise , dust and fumes drove me back towards the boat where luckily I took a side turning up to some hills and found a beautiful walking track with superb views back to the colourful homes. You can just see the ship to the left.
I really enjoyed my walk there. I was mostly completely alone, something I cherish after being on board for two weeks, but as the path disappeared I decided to turn back as nobody knew where I was. Pity, but I had really enjoyed the afternoon.
Soon it was time to set off again, once more to fabulous clouds and to glistening water.
