Sellin, Insel Rugen

So, here I am on the beautiful Insel Ruegen. As usual, I had not researched the area because I like to find out about places when I arrive, so I was rather surprised at how large the island was and how diverse, especially on the east coast where we were staying in Sellin.

We have a fabulous holiday home with two bedrooms upstairs and lounge kitchen and bathroom downstairs. What is particularly wonderful is the garden area. All this for 25 euros each! Fantastic.

We spent the first day exploring Sellin, a small holiday town on the coast, with a large lake as well as the beautiful coastline.

The walk along the beach was great. It is always nice and windy there and today was no exception. We had taken our swimming things with us but the waves were quite big in places and swimming not allowed. Good to paddle though.

Once again I was really taken by the dark clouds and the silvery light. Stunning!

As always I enjoyed the beautifully artistic patterns left on the sand after each wave heads back out to sea.

Next  was Sellin pier, which after the World wars, bitterly cold winters with ice, storms, etc, has been rebuilt on numerous occasions. It looked all the more attractive with the rows of Strandkorb in the foreground. I find these beach seats fascinating and such a good idea. Much more comfortable than the saggy British deckchairs!
After a stroll on the pier we went up towards Sellin and had this super view of pier and beach, beach volleyball to the right and wedding party to the left. So strange to have seen two wedding parties in the last couple of days where the majority of the guests were wearing black! The bridegroom looked hugely unimpressed by the number of photos being taken. We saw the poor man a half an hour later, still having photos taken. Not sure how long the marriage will last!

We certainly enjoyed mooching around this small town, which though touristy is not very busy and not overrun with souvenir shops, bars and restaurants. High summer might be rather different!
