Qeqertarsuag 25 August

Apparently there were Polar lights last night, but I missed them. Never mind. The clouds this morning were fabulous so I am happy with them. The icebergs looked ghostly , half visible through the early morning mist, like a ship in the distance.

As we neared our destination of Qeqertarsuag in Disko Fiord, not only did we have some lovely icebergs to enjoy, but we also had a close up view of two whales, in the bay. Super start. Disko fiord has nothing to do with music! It is a beautiful tranquil place with a narrow stretch of water which the boat has to negotiate. It is amazing it was possible.

I really enjoyed my five hours on land. I find it really necessary to get away from all the people sometimes and just sit and take in nature's wonders. As can be seen from the photo below, it is a wonderful place and although some passengers were apparently disappointed because there were not so many icebergs, I found the experience fantastic and loved what I saw. In the afternoon the light on the icebergs was perfect and so their individual beauty coukd be far better appreciated. I spent a long time at this beach taking in this breathtaking scenery.

As always, I found myself drawn to the graveyard which was on a small hill overlooking the iceberg beach. It was a serene place, well kept and although the graves were adorned with plastic flowers, they were nonetheless gorgeous.

The beach nearby had lots of iceberg pieces lying on it. All shapes and sizes and all just gorgeous.

This diamond on the beach is my particular favourite. When I got back a few hours later the pieces had all been washed away. I am glad I captured some of them on camera.

From the beach I took a path up a valley. I didn't have a good map but felt sure I would not get lost. It was fantastic and gave me a new aspect of the landscape in Greenland and also a slight explanation for the name - Greenland! The valley was stunningly beautiful and I really enjoyed sitting on the slope above the river, surrounded by beautiful, colourful shrubs. The colours were almost autumnal. Fantastic.

I took a different route back and found myself by a research station where they are researching the plant life on the island. I found the greenest area  by a little stream and a complete different view into the hills. Hard to say what was the highlight of my day, but this little stream was certainly one of several!

As we left this marvelous place we were of course  treated to some more spectacular scenery and cloud formationsAnd of course to top it all, an incredible sunset!
