Angers in the Loire valley

So off I went on my own again after 2 weeks with my long term friend Pam in Brittany. Seemed strange but at least I didn't hold her up with my picture taking.

I love Angers, and have walked most of the historical part - an amazing 33000 steps in fact. No wonder I have blisters !

The market here is massive and cleverly divided into arts and crafts, fruit abd veg, cheese and meat, fish, clothes abd flea market. It stretches over several large squares and so doesn't ever feel too busy. I have never seen so many fresh strawberries ! Would love to have bought kilos of them.  Felt so sorry for the  living crabs and lobsters suffering what must be a long and terrifying wait to die.

Of course, a visit to the castle, with itts 17 towers and beautiful ramparts, is a must. No great castle rooms and furniture but instead Spectacular views of city and river and of course Lovely gardens. There is also an amazing medieval tapestry, the Apocalypse. It is incredible to think how many years of work went into it.

Here is a view of the River Maine from the ramparts.

After the castle i happened upon a gay parade. Was great music and atmosphere and as i crossed the bridge I discovered a dance festival, which was an added bonus to the fantastic views from the port area.

As you can see, it is an impressive city. Well worth a visit, especially by bike - fabulous bike tracks everywhere.

Leaving early tomorrow for Strasbourg and after that Switzerland. Have really enjoyed France, its friendly people, the cleanliness, the food and its spectacular scenery and cute villages.
