Agrigento Valley of the temples and Scala dei Turchi

What amazing days we have had here. Time has flown yet at the same time we have seen so much without unduly rushing around. Perfect. We have had lots of laughs despite the state of the roads at times.

After our great evening in Agrigento we went straight to the Valley of the Temples in the morning. This has to be one of the most incredible archaeological sites I have ever visited.  I enjoyed it even more than the Forum in Rome, possibly due to the spectacular scenery all around.

It is a place to let your imagination run wild and to try to think how life must have been these thousands of years ago, what the people were like, their clothes, customs and how they managed to erect such unbelievable monuments which are still standing now, some very much intact. Amazing! This Tempo della Concordia is fabulous.

The tomb and villa area was beautiful with extensive views to the coast.

We loved the olive trees everywhere too - here at Tempo di Ercole

Even more special when there was a kitten there!

The views were not only magnificent of the coastline but also of Agrigento up on the hill . Although this temple, Tempio de Castors e Polluce was not in such good condition as the others I loved the shape of the remaining pillars and stones, like the giant horse of Troy.

What a magnificent place the valley was and it was well worth three euros to take a taxi to one end and walk back. It was pretty hot, about 27 degrees, so without shade it would have been a tough uphill grind.

For years I have thought about one day seeing the Scala dei Turchi. I had read about it in my Italian magazine Adesso, and now here I was looking at the most beautiful white cliffs I have ever seen.

How fantastic to sit on the naturally carved staircase and just stare in awe at yet another of nature's wonders!

After a climb back uphill towards the carpark we found a great restaurant overlooking the sea and coastline. I had an amusing time watching Dennis battling with his seafood salad which had lobster, crab and giant prawns, all of which needed to be shelled! Dennis was fast losing patience.

On arrival in Marsala in the evening we went to a wine bar to check out the famous Marsala wines. They were delicious and served with incredible tapas . Everyone was so friendly in the city and if we wanted to know the way somewhere, they simply took us there personally. It was very special. We had a really cute little appartment, right next to the old town. Short stay, but memorable.
