Killarney to Doolin

How lucky can we be? Already six days on the road and virtually no rain, even beautiful sunny days! Remarkable, in fact, for one of the rainiest areas in Ireland.

We had to get up north to Doolin but had a very relaxed morning and lunchtime enjoying the magnificent Killarney National Parknand its surroundings. We got some good recommendations fortunately. There is so much to see and we needed to choose the best. Ross Castle was our first destination. This beautifully restored 15 th century tower is perfectly situated besideLough Leane.
It was great to start the day with a gentle walk through the cool, dark forests to stunning viewpoints overlooking the Lough , with its fabulous backdrop of mountains,  many around 1000 metres high.

What a restful spot it is here and what incredible weather yet again! Mid twenties were perfect and I was thrilled to be away from the heatwave in Switzerland, experiencing an Irish heatwave ten degrees cooler.

Only a few kilometers away is the majestic Muckross House, built in 19 th century, with some of the most splendid gardens and sweeping lawns imagineable.

This was our next stop. Not only is the estate fantastic, but the surrounding landscape is really magnificent. How lovely to sit under a tree with a picnic lunch and to enjoy this lovely place!

We made a good decision to shorten the journey north by taking the ferry from Talbert to Kilrush. It was a good break from driving for me and really pleasant. It cut off heaps of driving.
This gave us time to take a very long, narrow, almost deserted road out to Loop Head, where we had been told we would get some great views of some cliffs,  better than the famous Cliffs of Moher we would see later on. I can't say I agree, but it was far less touristy and the cliffs were dramatic.

Doolin, famous for its folk music,  was our destination. We had an incredible meal at a tiny bistro run by Bulgarians, ans then visited a jam- packed pub with Irish mudic playing. There was a folk festival on so the village was heaving! We didn' stay so long, heading back to our fabulous B and B with great views down to the coast at Doolin.

Especially at sunset!
